First, Shift Your Mindset

You can figure out almost anything.

So why can’t you figure this out?

For intelligent, accomplished women who are ready to stop trying to fix what they cannot control.

You’re smart. Capable. Resourceful.

When something in your life isn’t working, you do what you’ve always done.

01You pay attention.

02You analyze.

03You learn.

04You adjust.

05You try harder.

And usually, you figure it out.

Except this.

You’ve tried explaining differently.

You’ve tried being more patient. Less reactive. More understanding.

You’ve read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Googled things you never imagined you’d be Googling.

You’ve replayed conversations looking for the part you missed.

You’ve tried to understand why he does what he does—and what you could possibly do differently to make things better.

And somehow, despite all that intelligence and effort, you’re still here.

Confused. Exhausted. And wondering why a woman who can handle so much of life cannot figure out what to do about this.

A question worth considering

What if some of your greatest strengths are actually part of what’s keeping you stuck?

Not because there is anything wrong with being intelligent, empathetic, loyal, conscientious, independent or determined. Quite the opposite.

Those qualities have probably served you extraordinarily well. But they may not be serving you well here.

The strategy that worked everywhere else

You learned a long time ago that when something matters, you don’t give up easily.

If there’s a problem, you work on it. If you don’t understand something, you learn more. If something isn’t working, you adjust.

If someone you love is struggling, you try to understand. If something needs to be handled, you handle it.

Those aren’t weaknesses. They’re strengths.

But when you use those same strengths to try to change someone else’s behavior, they can start working against you.

Your intelligence

becomes endless analysis.

Your perseverance

becomes endless trying.

Your empathy

becomes endless understanding.

Your conscientiousness

becomes taking responsibility for what isn’t yours.

Your capability

becomes carrying more and more because you can.

And when none of it works? You try harder.

A more useful strategy

Maybe you don’t need to become stronger.

Maybe you need to become much more strategic about where your strength goes.

That’s what First, Shift Your Mindset is designed to help you do.

FSM is an 8-module, self-paced program for intelligent, accomplished women who have spent far too much of their considerable mental and emotional energy trying to understand, manage, anticipate, explain to—or change—a difficult partner.

This isn’t a course about becoming stronger.
You’ve already proven how strong you are.

The question is: Where is all that strength going?

First, Shift Your Mindset helps you recognize how much of your intelligence, perseverance, empathy and energy you’ve been using to understand, manage, accommodate or change him—and start using more of it for yourself.

What begins to change

Less energy spent deciphering him. More clarity about you.

Less time determining why he said what he said

More time deciding what his behavior means for you.

Less time searching for the perfect explanation

More time recognizing when you’ve communicated enough.

Less time questioning whether you’re “allowed” to trust what you see

More time making decisions based on what you already know.

Less time automatically stepping in because you can

More time asking whether you should.

Less of your life organized around him.
More of it organized around you.

That’s the shift.

Inside the program

The 8 Shifts

01

Why You Can't Figure This Out

The Strategy That Worked Everywhere Else

See how the qualities that have made you successful in the rest of your life can work very differently inside this relationship—and identify where your own strengths may be keeping you engaged in problems you cannot solve.

Exercise: The Strategic Strengths Assessment

02

Trust What You Know

Stop Putting Your Own Perception on Trial

Learn to separate what you actually know from the fear, doubt and competing narratives that keep sending you back to the beginning.

Exercise: What Do I Know?

03

Stop Trying to Figure Him Out

You Don't Need to Know Why

Shift your attention away from endlessly analyzing his motives and toward the information that's actually useful: the pattern, its impact on you, and the choices available to you.

Exercise: Pattern → Impact → Choice

04

Stop Explaining. Start Deciding.

His Disagreement Isn't a Problem to Solve

Recognize when communication has quietly turned into an attempt to secure agreement, approval or understanding—and learn when you've said enough.

Exercise: What Are You Still Trying to Prove?

05

The Decision With No Perfect Answer

A Hard Decision Can Still Be the Right Decision

Stop treating discomfort, consequences or someone else's unhappiness as automatic evidence that you're making the wrong choice. Learn to evaluate the actual tradeoffs—including the cost to you.

Exercise: The Tradeoff Test

06

Choose What Deserves Your Effort

Just Because You Can Handle It Doesn't Mean You Should

Your capacity is valuable. Stop treating it like an unlimited resource. Learn to distinguish between what you can carry and what actually deserves your time, attention and effort.

Exercise: The Strategic Effort Audit

07

Welcome Yourself Back

You Haven't Disappeared. You've Been Crowded Out.

Look at the ways you've adapted to your circumstances without confusing those adaptations with who you are. Begin making room again for the parts of yourself that have had very little room lately.

Exercise: What Have I Put Aside?

08

Create Your Peace

Stop Organizing Your Life Around What You Can't Control

Peace doesn't require him to change. And it doesn't have to wait until every problem in your life is resolved. Begin redirecting your attention, effort and strengths toward the life you actually want to be living.

Exercise: Your 12-Week Peace Plan

Decision-neutral, by design

This isn’t about telling you what to do.

First, Shift Your Mindset will not tell you whether to stay married.

It will not tell you to separate.

And it will not tell you to divorce.

Because that’s your decision.

What FSM will do is help you get to a place where you’re better able to make that decision—and all the smaller decisions surrounding it—from clarity rather than confusion.

  • Trust what you know.
  • Recognize what is and isn’t yours to solve.
  • Accept that some decisions have tradeoffs.
  • Use your effort more deliberately.
  • Stop requiring circumstances—or another person—to change before you begin changing how you live inside them.

Monthly live Q&A

You don’t have to figure out every question alone.

First Monday of every month at 1:00 PM ET

This isn’t another class. It’s a place to bring the questions that arise when you start trying to use these ideas in your actual life.

Because understanding something while you’re reading a lesson is one thing.

Remembering it when you’re in the middle of a difficult conversation, questioning a decision, or feeling yourself getting pulled back into an old pattern?

That’s where having somewhere to bring the question can help.

The Q&A is live and not recorded to protect participants’ privacy.

Camera optional. Use an alternate name if you’d like. Listen without speaking if that’s what you need that day.

Your Zoom access and current schedule will always be available inside FSM.

FSM may be for you if…

You’re the person everyone else counts on—but you’re exhausted by how uncertain you feel in your own marriage.

You’ve spent an extraordinary amount of time trying to understand why he does what he does.

You keep thinking that if you can just explain something the right way, he’ll finally understand.

You’re very good at handling things—and increasingly aware that you may be handling far too much.

You can see that there is a problem but still find yourself questioning your perception, your choices or what to do next.

You don’t necessarily know whether you want to stay, separate or divorce.

You just know you cannot keep doing this the same way.

If you recognize yourself here, FSM was built for you.

Victoria McCooey, High-Conflict Divorce Coach and Certified Divorce Mediator

A note from Victoria

There was a time when I believed that if I could just understand the situation well enough, work hard enough and find the right strategy, I could solve it.

After all, that approach had worked pretty well for me everywhere else. Until it didn’t.

One of the most important things I eventually understood was that I didn’t need more strength.

I needed to stop using so much of mine trying to change what I couldn’t control.

That’s the idea at the heart of First, Shift Your Mindset.

I created FSM because I want you to recognize something much earlier than I did:

Your intelligence is valuable.
Your perseverance is valuable.
Your empathy is valuable.
Your capacity is valuable.

The question is where you want to use them.

Frequently asked questions

The practical details.

01Do I have to be getting divorced?+

No. FSM is intentionally decision-neutral. You may be staying, considering separation, preparing for divorce, already divorcing, or simply trying to understand what you want. The purpose isn't to make the decision for you. It's to help you make your decisions more clearly.

02What if I'm not sure my husband is a narcissist?+

You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from FSM. The work focuses primarily on your patterns, your decisions, your effort and what you can control rather than proving why another person behaves the way he does.

03How quickly should I complete the program?+

There is no prize for finishing first. There will be no valedictorian. Move quickly enough to maintain momentum and slowly enough to actually use what you're learning.

04Is the monthly Q&A recorded?+

No. The Q&A is live only and is not recorded in order to protect participants' privacy.

05Is this therapy or legal advice?+

No. FSM is an educational coaching program. The monthly Q&A provides general mindset-focused coaching and education; it is not therapy, legal advice or crisis support.

06How long will I have access?+

You'll have lifetime access to the FSM course materials.

One final thought

You already know how to work hard.

You already know how to persevere.

You already know how to carry difficult things.

You already know how to keep going.

Maybe becoming stronger was never the answer.

Maybe the next shift is learning to use the strength you already have much more strategically.

Less of your life organized around what you cannot control.
More of it organized around what matters to you.

Peace.
